Joyce Grill: Pedagogy This and That

Our 2013-2014 year will start off big with presenter Joyce Grill. A former faculty member at UW-La Crosse, Ms. Grill provides practical suggestions from her extensive teaching experience. On September 14, she will share with CVMTA a program titled “Pedagogy This and That.” Always an interesting presenter, she will give practical advice for students at all levels and abilities to help jump-start your year.   • Technique
  • Fingering
  • Sight-reading
  • Choosing supplementary music

At our special request, Ms. Grill will include points from her presentation on including music appreciation in the lesson.  With a two-hour format, there will be time for questions and discussion.

About the presenter:

Joyce Grill holds the MTNA Master Teacher Certificate and has been active in MTNA, serving as the Wisconsin State President and the Division Vice-President. In 2006, she was named an MTNA Foundation Fellow. She was the Wisconsin State Commissioned Composer in 2010 and the Arizona State Commissioned Composer in 2013. She also founded the La Crosse Area Music Teachers Association and serves on several arts advisory boards.

Ms. Grill holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has received training at the School of Fine Arts in Fontainebleau, France, where she studied theory and composition with Nadia Boulanger and piano with Robert and Jean Casadesus.

Known for her ensemble writing, Ms. Grill is also a frequent guest conductor for multi-piano concerts. Her compositions include solos as well as duets and trios. Many of these works are published by Alfred MusicAccompanying Basics and Christmas Together are available from Kjos
